HOST SCHOOL ELEGIBILITY
• Host schools in the United States must be affiliated with an accredited K-12 educational system, whether public, charter, or private, and provide comprehensive academic programs on a full-time basis.
• Accreditation by relevant educational authorities in their respective jurisdictions is mandatory for host schools, ensuring their financial stability to offer full-time teaching positions.
• J-1 exchange teachers must be compensated with salaries and benefits comparable to those of U.S. teachers with similar qualifications and experience.
• Employment contracts must cover a full academic year, extendable up to 3 years with a potential 2-year extension under the J-1 Program.
• Host schools are obliged to organize annual cross-cultural activities, integral to the J-1 Program, within both the school and local community, and assign mentors to support participating teachers at the program’s commencement.
• All accredited public and private U.S. primary and secondary schools (K-12) are eligible to host exchange visitor teachers, with teaching positions being full-time (minimum 32 hours per week) and starting at the beginning of the academic year.
• Exchange Visitor Teachers must adhere to any applicable collective bargaining agreement, and their roles, responsibilities, hours of employment, and compensation must be equivalent to those of similarly-situated U.S. teachers.
